In 1929, the US airforce had a problem. They had premium planes and peerless pilots, but their pilots’ visibility was still hampered by the intense blues and whites of the sky. They turned to Bausch & Lomb, a New York-based medical equipment manufacturer, who created a new kind of aviation sunglasses. These were wider to reduce the chance of light getting in and had a new kind of anti-glare technology which filtered out the ‘haze’ from blue light. Today, we know them as ’aviators,’ and we know Bausch & Lomb’s sunglasses as Ray-Bans.
